The 14U Kent Team have just won the County Cup. James Davis from The Appeti Tennis Centre competed in position 1 throughout the event and achieved some impressive scores!
The Event started with the team travelling to Southampton for their qualifying event where they had to face 3 other counties to win their place at the National Finals.
The teams were put into round robin boxes and the first day saw James winning against Kerim Bilgin from Berkshire 6-2, 6-3. He then went onto beat Austin Gwilliam from Hampshire 6-4, 6-3 to help Kent win their place in the qualifying final. In the final Kent met Buckinghamshire and with only one team going on to the National event there was everything to play for! This time James played Jack Molloy where he took an early lead and never looked back winning the match 6-2, 6-0. With the rest of the team also successfully beating their opponents Kent secured their place at the Finals in Nottingham
The National Finals saw the eight best counties from the qualifying stages coming together. These teams were divided into two round robin boxes with the winning team from each box progressing to the final. Kent were grouped with Norfolk, Yorkshire and Middlesex.
The first day saw James Davis playing Will Davies from Norfolk. The first set proved a close affair but James played solidly and walked away with the victory 7-6(2), 6-2. Overall it was a great start for Kent with a 5-0 win going into the second day.
In his next match James faced Conor Tordoff from Yorkshire. Again the first set was close with James just pulling ahead to win 6-4. Play then stopped for the day! The next morning with a fresh start James was ready for battle and took the second set 6-1. With the rest of the team winning their matches Kent were still in the running for the title.
Their final round in the round robin stage saw Kent meeting Middlesex who were real contenders for the final. With both teams winning their previous days it was going to be a tough day! James was drawn against Louis Newman and after an extremely close match James won through 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(8). With his team mates having mixed results the doubles were key to Kent reaching the final. James partnered Nicholas Brookes and together they beat Alex Chan and Louis Newman 6-3, 6-2. Team mates Jonah Smith and Matthew Summers also played well to secure the win taking Kent into the Final!
Kent now faced Surrey with the winner taking the 14U National County Cup title for 2013. During his match against Zack Norman James put in a great performance and convincingly won 6-1, 6-0. With the rest of the team also playing well the Kent boys saw off their opposition with what was described by the Surrey Captain as a ruthless performance. This win meant that Kent lifted the 14U County Cup for the first time ever!
Well done James on successfully winning all your county cup matches and congratulations to the 14U Kent team on this brilliant achievement!
