During September and October our players have been busy competing in the Appeti Tennis Championships for 2014. With fourteen titles being decided ranging in age from 10U to adults there was plenty of opportunity for both adults and juniors alike.
Finals weekend saw some close matches where players fought hard to lift the trophy for 2014. The first match to take to the courts saw Rosie Hewett facing Marta Poriete to contest the 14U girls title. This was a really close affair with both girls battling hard in what proved to be one of the most exciting finals of the Championships. Rosie came flying out of the blocks to take the first set 6-2. Marta focused and played some great tennis win the second 4-6 to level the score. The deciding tiebreak saw both girls playing some fantastic points but in the end Rosie just managed to pull ahead to take the win with a 10-7 scoreline. It was a great start to the finals weekend!
Next up saw four of The Appeti Tennis School pupils playing each other in the 14U mixed doubles event. Marta joined forces with Ciaran Brewer whilst Rosie paired up with Oliver Richards. Rosie and Oliver took an early lead in the first set and although Ciaran and Marta worked well as a team they couldn’t quite close the gap meaning the slightly older pairing retained their title of Appeti Tennis 14U Mixed doubles champions!
As the first day of competition drew to a close Tim Bean faced pupil and fellow coaching team member Graham Hunt in the Men’s singles final. In a rerun of last years event Graham wanted to try and swing the tables to take the 2014 crown however Tim was determined to hold onto his title for a bit longer and made short work of the match winning through to take the title 6-3, 6-0.
The second day saw our 14U boys playing at the Appeti Tennis Centre whilst the ladies doubles took to Freedom Leisure’s astro courts. In the ladies event coach Ffion Newberry partnered Sara Richards to play Vicky Clark and Marina Yartseva. In what proved a very friendly affair Ffion and Sara’s greater experience showed through allowing them to leave the court without dropping a game to win the Ladies Doubles event for 2014. The 14U Boys singles match proved a much closer affair with JoJo Thomas meeting Ollie Richards. The two lads have met in a few finals over the last few years and were both determined to come out on top! However Ollie was able to edge ahead in the first set and then stayed focused to maintain his lead and win through 6-3, 6-3.
The 14U Girls doubles were next to take to the courts with previous winners Marta and Rosie facing the new pairing of Afalina Vinogradova and Esther Kendrick White. Marta and Rosie’s knowledge of each others game proved invaluable and helped them confidently take an early lead which, combined with their greater match experience allowed them to leave the court with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
In the 10U event Sebastian McDonnell-Palomares took the title after Joseph Richards had to retire with an injury. Both boys had played some great tennis in their semi’s to reach the final and thoroughly deserved their trophies. The 12U draw saw fellow Appeti Tennis School pupil’s Ollie Richards and Ciaran Brewer playing each other. Ciaran showed how much his tennis had progressed this year by reaching this final for the first time and really wanted to take the title off his classmate! However Ollie had different ideas and after what was a closely fought contest Ollie managed to take the lead to retain his title of 12U champion for another year!
In the 16U event Morgan Moloney beat Owen Alp 6-0, 6-0 before joining up with Oliver Richards to meet Dushan Sreckovic and JoJo Thomas in the 14U boys doubles draw. This proved to be one of the epic battles of the championships with both pairings wanting to win through. Dushan and JoJo took the first set 6-3 whilst Ollie and Morgan battled through to take the second 7-6(3). In the tiebreak Dushan and JoJo worked well as a pair and quickly took an early lead to secure the win 10-2.
The Open mixed doubles saw another close match with Graham Hunt and Andrea Sreckovic playing husband and wife team, Carine and Heinrich Nienaber. Both pairs played some great points with some stunning passing shots however after a long match Carine and Heinrich just pulled ahead to take the win 6-4, 6-4.
In the last matches of the Championships two of our coaches were back in action with Ffion Newberry meeting her pupil, Vicky Clark in the Ladies singles whilst Tim Bean partnered one of his pupils, Dan Gould to play two of his other pupils Darren Griffin and Heinrich Nienaber in the Mens Doubles. In the ladies final Vicky Clark played well but Ffion’s greater experience showed through allowing her to win without dropping a game. In the men’s doubles Darren and Heinrich determined to try and find a way to defeat their coach tried every tactic in the book but to no avail. Tim and Dan were able to successfully hold off their efforts to take the last title of the Championships for 2014 with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Congratulations to all our players who have competed in The Appeti Tennis Championships for 2014.
