Last weekend saw the finals of The 2012 Appeti Championships being played. In all over the weekend 15 titles were contested.
Saturday started with our mixed doubles taking to the courts.
The 14U event saw JoJo Thomas pairing up with Rosie Hewett whilst William Gee, our youngest competitor in these championships, joined forces with Evie Robertson. Rosie and JoJo took an early lead and although Evie and Will fought hard they couldn’t quite close the gap allowing Rosie and JoJo to take the title 6-2, 6-4
Meanwhile on the other court the Adult mixed final saw Tim Bean partnering his mum, Julie playing Ffion Newberry and Graham Hunt. The first set was a very close affair with the scores see-sawing between the pairs however Julie and Tim managed to just pull ahead to secure the first set 6-4. Graham and Ffion rallied round and with a change of tactics took the second set 6-1. From here the two of them didn’t look back and won the deciding tie-break 10-2 to take the victory!
Craig Coles, a member of The Canterbury High School Tennis Academy, and Charlie Songsmith met in the 16U final in what proved to be close affair. After two sets the lads were one a piece and everything came down to the final tiebreak. Charlie’s greater experience in matchplay situations showed through and he was able to hold his nerve to win 7-6(6), 4-6, 10-6.
The 12U Girls Singles took to the courts next with Rosie Hewett meeting Millie Sutherland Thorne. Although Millie is still relatively new to competition she persevered throughout the match but Rosie proved too strong and won 6-0, 6-0.
The final matches of the day saw Dan Gould and Tim Bean join forces to take on Graham Hunt and Michael Williams in the men’s doubles final and four of our younger players, Oliver Richards and Stephen Friend meeting Dushan Sreckovic and JoJo Thomas in the 14U Boys doubles final.
Oliver and Stephen won through 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 to take the 14U title in what was probably the closest match of the whole championships whilst Dan and Tim won this year’s mens title 6-3, 6-2.
Sundays matches started with the 14U Boys and the 16U Girls finals.
The 14U Boys saw Oliver Richards meeting Dushan Sreckovic. The boys were contesting the 14U and 12U titles so this was to be their first encounter of the day! Both boys played some fantastic tennis throughout the match with points that kept spectators on the edge of their seats however Oliver’s greater consistency showed through and after a real battle he took the match 6-3, 6-3.
On the other court Evie Robertson was playing Mia Bernthal. Mia put up a great fight but Evie’s experience and power helped her secure the win without dropping a game to take the match 6-1, 6-1
Rachel Hudson and Vicky Clark were next on court to contest the Ladies title for 2012. In what proved to be an epic match with the score swinging between each player Rachel was just able to edge ahead 7-6(5), 7-5 to win the title.
The 18U final saw a rematch of last year’s 16U boys with Graham Hunt, a member of The Canterbury High School Tennis Academy, and Michael Williams meeting in another close affair. In the first set Michael played some great tennis really making Graham work hard for every point. Graham regrouped and was able to turn the tide to take the second set 6-2. The deciding tiebreak saw both lads battling hard with Graham just coming out on top to win through 10-6.
The 10U event saw Stephen Friend and Ciaran Brewer meeting head to head. Stephen’s greater experience on the green transition ball showed and he left the court victorious with a winning score of 6-2, 6-0.
Next to take the stage was the second meeting of Dushan and Ollie with Ollie hoping to repeat his earlier performance and Dushan planning to take the upper hand. Throughout the match Ollie remained confident and stayed light on his feet whilst moving the ball around the court which allowed him to come out on top 6-0, 6-0.
The final matches of the tournament saw Graham Hunt playing his coach, Tim Bean and Sara Richards, not to be outdone by her son, joining forces with Ffion Newberry to face Rachel Hudson and Evie Robertson in the Ladies doubles final.
In the Mens Singles Graham showed how much progress he has made this year by pushing Tim hard but throughout the match Tim remained in control and retained his title 6-2, 6-2 but who can tell what will happen in the future!!!
Meanwhile in the ladies doubles the partnership of Sara and Ffion successfully won through 6-1, 6-1.
We’d like to congratulate all our players who have competed in The Appeti Championships 2012 and well done to all our trophy winners!!
