The third week of the summer saw thirteen of our youngsters heading towards the south coast for The Devonshire Park Open 2012 at Eastbourne.
This tournament had a real holiday atmosphere with many of our players and their families staying in the area. It also gives our youngsters chance to play on the grass courts where just a few months before they had been able to watch players like Andy Roddick and Heather Watson at The Eastbourne International.
This week was slightly different to the past with a change in date meaning that it ran a week later which coinsided with The Eastbourne Air Show. This added to the spectators entertainment and also gave us the opportunity to take a helicopter ride and gain a birds eye view of the tennis centre whilst some of our players were on court!
James Davis had another good week, playing some great tennis to reach the final of the 14U boys event where after an exciting, nail biting match he beat the number 1 seed, Joe Tyler, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
Stephen Friend played confidently in the 10U consolation draw to secure a place for himself in the final where he beat Lucas Askaroff 2-4, 4-0, 1-0(0).
In the 12U consolation event Morgan Moloney showed great determination to fight back in the semi’s against Hayden Acott after losing the second set 1-6 to take the match 10-8 in the championship tiebreak.
Both the 16U consolation finals had Appeti interest in them with Evie Robertson playing in the girls and Dan Gould in the boys. Both youngsters played well with Dan just losing out to Aly Dewji, 3-6, 2-6 whilst Evie remained positive and focused to beat Ella Cotsford 6-1, 6-2.
The last match for us, saw Charlotte Hobbs in her second final of the summer facing Amy Flood in the 18U consolation. Charlotte was able to use her greater strength to her advantage and took the match 6-1, 6-1.
Once again all of our youngsters have played well this week and showed great sportsmanlike attitude throughout their matches. Thanks to Tennis Services Uk whose organisation of the tournament gave our juniors a great experience on grass. We are all looking forward to next years event!!
