The next stop of our summer tour saw our players competing in The Devonshire Park Open, which is professionally managed by Tennis Services UK and held at The International Tennis Centre in Eastbourne. This is always a great experience for our youngsters as they have the opportunity to compete on the very courts where we watched international stars like Fernando Verdasco and Samantha Stosur playing a few months earlier.
During the week there were some solid play from our youngsters who were supported by the Appeti Team throughout.
Jamie Wallace had another good week reaching the semi finals of the 16U main draw whilst Oliver Richards played well to reach the semi final in the 14U Consolation event.
At the younger end William Gee and Joseph Richards had a great tournament in the 9U event. Both boys played well during their qualifying rounds to gain their places in the quarter finals. At this stage they came head to head. With only one of them being able to qualify to the semi’s there was some great play from both lads but this time Will just managed to clinch the win 7-1, 10-8.
Will had a close semi final match but managed to pull ahead to win his place in the final 7-5, 0-7, 7-5 whilst Joseph confidently eased through his next match 7-2, 7-2 to take his place in the consolation final!
In his final Joseph was against Thomas Large. In the first set Joseph found himself 5-0 down and knew he was going to have to lift his game if he wanted to win through. He rallied himself and focused hard and after the slow start left the court with a 5-7, 7-3, 8-6 victory
Meanwhile in the main draw final Will was playing Henry Dutton. Will settled well, took an early lead and never looked back leaving the court as The Eastbourne Open 9U Champion for 2013 having beaten Henry 7-3, 7-3.
This was a great result for our youngsters
Well done to all our players who competed this week but especially to Will on this great achievement and thanks to Tennis Services UK and Devonshire Park LTC for an enjoyable, well run tournament.
