The week of the 18th August 2014 saw the Appeti team heading to the courts in Eastbourne for the Devonshire Park LTC Open Tournament. This is a great event which sees our youngsters playing on the same grass courts that they use for the International tennis tournament that we visited in June.
Throughout the week our players put in some great performances which showed how their matchplay has progressed over the summer.
JoJo Thomas and Will Gee both had really close matches with the eventual winners of their relevant age groups. JoJo just lost out to Alex D'Souza, the number 1 seed, in the final set tiebreak 9-11. Throughout the match the boys were totally level even though Alex is 3 ratings higher and the final result really could have gone either way! Will qualified comfortably to the 10U main draw where he face Lemuel Cassidy(G1*) in what proved to be the longest match of the draw. Both boys played some great tennis matching each other point for point. After nearly two hours Will just lost out 4-5(5), 5-4(4), 8-10
Our first medal of the week saw Ulrich Nienaber continue his successful summer by winning the consolation draw in the 9U event. Ulrich, who is playing up an age group met Sergio Vieira in the final. This was another close contest but Ulrich managed to edge ahead and win the title 8-6, 5-7, 7-4.
Rosie Hewett played consistently well throughout the week to reach the consolation final in the 14U girl's event where she met Jordayne McGowan-Paul(6.2) who was the number one seed. Rosie played well pushing her opponent all the way. After a really close match Rosie had to settle for the silver medal as Jordayne secured the winning point to finish 3-6, 6-0, 12-10.
In the 12U girls consolation event Marta Poriete reached the final where she faced Elizabeth Kober. Marta played well throughout the match to win through confidently 6-3, 6-3 Meanwhile in the boys consolation draw Oliver Richards met Lleyton Edwards. After a quick start to the final which saw Oliver take the first set 6-2, Lleyton fought back to level the score. However Oliver remained focused and managed to pull ahead to win the match 10-7 in the championship tie break.
The final Appeti match of the week saw Ollie and JoJo joining forces to play Henry Davis and Sam Nicholson in the 12U doubles final. After what had been a fantastic week at a brilliantly organised tournament the boys made a confident start and never looked back to leave the court the victors 6-3, 6-1.
We'd like to thank Tennis Services UK for their professional approach throughout the week and we are all looking forward to returning next summer!
