On Saturday 25th May some of our academy youngsters headed towards Paris for the Appeti Tennis/Lingo Lingo annual trip to The French Open.
The day started early with most of the group meeting in Canterbury at 5.15am to head towards Ashford and the Eurostar terminal. There we were joined by more of our youngsters before we went through the security and passport checks. It then wasn’t long before we boarded our train and sped through the tunnel and across the French countryside towards Paris!
From the Eurostar terminal a short trip on the metro took us all to meet up with Eb, Faye, Fillie, Jamal and Ade, who had travelled the night before to join us there. The group then followed the balls and rackets painted on the pavements to take us towards the main entrance and into the grounds where we were able to enjoy the atmosphere of Kid’s Day at Roland Garros!
A quick tour round the grounds gave our players the opportunity to watch a number of past and present top 10 world ranked players including Rafa Nadal, Caroline Wozniacki, David Ferrer, Petra Kvitova, Fernando Verdasco and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Just before we settled down to ‘the main event’ our youngsters had the opportunity to see Novak Djokovic practising on Court 2. After this great experience which was inspiring for everyone we set off to join the fun on Phillipe Chatrier court. The afternoon started with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga playing an exhibition match with Lucas Pouille. Shortly after with music provided by the DJ Bob Sinclar and Djokovic himself the ‘party began!‘ One of the highlights had to be when Mansour Bahrami, Fabrice Santoro, Guy Forget and Henri Leconte appeared on court to play their part in entertaining the crowd.
Unfortunately the day had to draw to a close with just chance to grab a few souvenirs from the shop and have a group photo before we left to catch the eurostar home.
A great day was had by all and everyone is looking forward to our next visit to Roland Garros and The French Open in 2014!
